December Newsletter: Random Acts of Kindness

5646540084_d26b9ca3e6_z

How would you feel if a stranger showed you kindness?

Recently, a florist in London distributed single roses to passers-by and asked each recipient to pay the random act of kindness forward to a stranger.

“Psychologists maintain that acts of kindness produce endorphins, helping to promote a ripple effect of kindness, and that altruism is good for the individual and good for society.

Dr George Fieldman, a psychologist specialising in altruism said, ‘A random act of kindness is doing something spontaneous and generous to someone without expecting anything back in return. Science shows us that people who act altruistically tend to be happier, healthier and, in fact, to live longer themselves. Societies that embrace altruism foster cultures in which people become integrated, co-operative and empowered, which is of benefit to us all.’”

This holiday season, we invite you to participate in 25 Random Acts of Kindness, an idea created by the blogger Molly Stillman along with her daughter, Lilly.  The idea is to do one act of kindness for a stranger each day leading up to December 25.  Not sure where to start?  Molly has created a calendar filled with suggestions.  Check it out below and on her blog, “Still Being Molly

September Newsletter: Changing Seasons

3189429783_b8c82ecdda_o

Can you feel a cool breeze in the air?  Fall is just around the corner and with it, a sense of new beginnings.

The change from summer to autumn can be:

Seen…

In the color of the bursting bright orange leaves.

Touched…

Plucking a plump McIntosh apple straight from its tree.

Heard…

In children’s voices playing at the schoolyard.

Tasted…

Sipping the first pumpkin spice latte of the season.

Smelled…

In the scents of cider and cinnamon and sage.

Join us as we take a moment to drink in the change of seasons and ponder the possibilities it will bring.

What inspires you about fall?  What are your hopes for this season?  We’d love to hear from you.

Till soon,

June Newsletter: Happy Campers

tumblr_mpp5bgW7nA1sta3d3o1_1280

Every summer growing up, my sister and I went to camp for a week in New Hampshire.  The drive up north was full of anticipation, as the air turned cooler, the mountains came into view in the distance, and we talked about the old camp friends we’d get to see again.  We knew there was something unique and special about it all that couldn’t be easily replicated.  Bunking in cabins, trekking through the woods to breakfast each morning, spending hours by the lake, campfires each night — that was summer at its grandest.

With summer ‘round the bend, that sense of anticipation sticks with me, even after all these years.  We hope you feel that same excitement and sense of wonder, no matter what your summer plans may hold.  Maybe it’s a weekend in the Poconos, a day trip to the beach, or a vacation somewhere exotic.  Maybe it’s a Fourth of July BBQ with family, a road trip with your best friend, or even just the chance to get lost in a book on a lazy summer afternoon.  With endless possibilities and a little imagination, every summer can still be an adventure.

April Newsletter: The Big 3-0

vintage_1986_t_shirts-rff40cf7463e442c2a30d6119de80688a_jooai_1024

What does turning 30 mean?

A bit of a daunting question.  Although it’s said that a woman should never reveal her age, we found turning 30 too big of a milestone to overlook.  (Bethany turned the big 3-0 in March, and Jillian will celebrate her thirtieth tomorrow!)

Growing up, I remember watching the “thirty-something’s” on TV shows like Friends and Sex in the City.  There’s an illusion that the characters on those shows had “arrived” at adulthood.  Especially given the size of their gargantuan New York City apartments.  Gosh, according to an article on Bustle.com, Monica Geller’s apartment would run for about $14,000 a month these days.  And of course, it comes with all amenities you could wish for, including best friends for neighbors.  Something seems a bit off with this picture of “adulthood” in New York City…

While for us, being adults HAS meant finding our place in the city that never sleeps, it has not meant having picture-perfect apartments or closets full of beautiful designer shoes.  To us, turning thirty means two things: one, that we haven’t yet “arrived” (and may never!), and two, that it’s OK — and perhaps even more important — to enjoy the journey along the way.  It even reminds us of the name of our band… while we may still be wandering, we’re taking things in stride, enjoying the process of change and growth and finding our voice, as we seek out that place we may one day learn to call home.

And as always, we want to welcome you along our journey.

Till soon,

Jillian & Bethany
